Cordillera Real, Condoriri Base Camp

The Cordillera Real or Royal Range stretches northwest from La Paz for 200 kilometers. We explored the southern end of the range with a day trek out of La Paz to the Condoriri base camp and the northern end with a week of trekking near Sorata around the base of Nevado Illampu. This photos shows Illampu on the far left and Condoriri on the far right.
Our trip to Condoriri started out of the small town of Tuni a three hour drive out of La Paz over a bumpy dirt road. The snow-covered peaks of the Real are believed to be home to the spirits of the Aymara Indian ancestors. In Tuni, the peak of Maria Lloco appears as a peaceful resting place.
Known as the 'Matterhorn of Bolivia', Condoriri appears like a giant condor with wings outstretched.
Along the way we met a few local women tending to their sheep.
Lake Juri Khota is a nice setting for the climbing base camp.
